Upgrading an Irish home: which question to answer first

These four tools answer parts of one decision, and the order is not a preference. SEAI describes a fabric-first approach, and for most of the housing stock the heat-pump route runs through a technical assessment that says what fabric work the house needs before the grant application. That makes the insulation question a precondition rather than a parallel option. No answers are passed between pages or stored.

Before you decide

Compare home-energy options on the same basis

Home-energy decisions usually mix two different questions: what a system can deliver at one moment and what it may save across a month or year. A heater, heat pump, battery and solar diverter cannot be compared from headline capacity alone. Your tariff, usage pattern, home fabric and existing equipment all change the answer.

Use these calculators as a first pass before requesting quotes. Every rate that decides an answer in this area is yours to enter rather than a national average chosen here, and each result names the figures it used, so replacing a default with your own bill genuinely moves the answer. Where a figure is maintained for you instead, it is published beside the document it came from and marked as sourced or as a Verdanyx assumption.

Start with the bill and the building

Recent bills, day and night rates, BER information and known heat loss are more useful than a generic national average. A cheaper technology can still disappoint if the house or tariff does not suit it.

Keep power and energy separate

Kilowatts describe how quickly equipment can deliver or consume power; kilowatt-hours describe energy over time. Sizing and running-cost questions often need both.

Treat payback as a range

Weather, occupancy, future tariffs and how much generated energy you use yourself can move a payback estimate. Test a cautious case as well as the central estimate.
